Watching it unfold...

Chandra frequently provides the Internet with video conversation, demonstrations of her illustration process, or samples of her work in stages. (See her Links page at http://spookychan.com/links/)

What impact does this "behind the scenes" access have on others' reception of her work? Is there any downside? And, odd as this may sound, what if she were very, very ugly -- would that limit her reception through these venues?

Re: Watching it unfold...

Thanks Dave for starting this insightful topic.

I too am curious about what people think on this matter.

Here is a good example of one of my "behind the scenes" of a cover- http://spookychan.com/2009/08/the-makin ... cover-art/
In addition to that, I'm fairly notorious for having live broadcasts of me working on comic pages, and chatting with whoever comes online.

Now, I won't add much more to this conversation since I don't want to sway what others have to say.
I look forward to honest replies.

p.s. I must add that i do enjoy broadcasting live mostly for the fact I don't feel so alone while working, and in hopes that people do enjoy watching a page unfold.

Ah! I hadn't even thought of that -- not only might it impact your viewers/followers, but it can have its own feedback on you. And for the positive! No lonely Chan.

Good to see my best pal Chan here already!

For anyone interested, I have seen several of Chandra's Ustream broadcasts, and it's a happy party time that should NOT be missed!

Re: Watching it unfold...

We have been posting our progress on Beautiful Scars on our blog (www.perpetualflights.blogspot.com) and generally it has been well-received. Durwin found with his last project that it definitely did not get enough publicity and really regrets not having a strong web presence. We wanted to be as visible as possible with this one, and felt that a progress blog would be a good way to do it. On the whole, we have had great feedback with it – people really enjoy seeing how things are put together, how it breaks down. I for one love seeing how something really amazing-looking (like Chandra's stuff!) is created, step-by-step.

I love the idea of a live web-cast, it brings you one step closer to your audience in a way that static images can't, and that is a great thing. It makes you that much easier to recognize at conventions! I don't think anybody wants to see our dirty-ass studio with us making horrible jokes all the time, cursing at the computer, etc, though. :) This is an incredibly lonely process, though - if I wasn't sitting across a table from someone, it would be so much harder.

I don't doubt that Chandra's hot self helps out her fan base, but I think that only applies to a specific portion of one's fanbase. I've seen process videos by amazing artists who were just average, perhaps not conventionally pretty people, but I'm not there to look at THEM, I'm there to look at the ART. If someone is trolling art sites for hot girl videos, they probably have broader, dirtier options elsewhere on the internet, dontcha think?

We probably won't be doing videos cause we work awfully slow. But I like it when other people do.
